Hello you!

My goodness. We are just about done with the winter quarter here at work and my body is in hyperdrive. Had to go to the pin doctor to see if he could turn down my dial. So far, so good. But I had no idea how dependent I had become on working at the speed of sound. Luckily, my adrenals were not blown (whew), in fact everything was fine but the heart and lungs--I am runnin hot like an overclocked computer, like a souped up mustang on synthetic oil, like a credit-addicted economy on cash. Burning through it! Who knew that a yawn could be welcomed back like a long lost friend? This week yawns were passed out by the handfuls while we all scrambled to get out of the heat caused by our charbroiled cash reserves. One yawn: the NEA is getting down to the business of stimulating artists with some of that cash. As I thought, they are kinda hoarding most of it, or rather, disbursing it in undemocratic ways by giving money to former grantees directly, and then making a portion available for organizations to apply for to re-grant. I wish the MAP fund folks were in charge of the purse strings. But since they are not, there is a small group of us here in LA wrapping our brains around how to create value, maintain spaces and deliver more cost-effective performances without an influx of cash. So keep your eyes peeled, and be ready to donate to various 'micro-fundraisers', cause we likely still gonna need to pay the rent with cash.

BLOWING BACK DA FRO right now is Facebook as the 6th largest nation on the planet. Dig that! And as such, there is a lot going on "in there" that is actually going on "out here." You know we have conquered time and space when someone sends you a chat message asking you to come to their workshop and call them, they in NYC and you in LA and the workshop is next week. YES! Look at all this work taking the sting out of the stimulus.

TeAda presents two short new works to heal women's souls. "Breakfast with my Mother" by Maria Martinez investigates dementia, retirement and gardens in Chicana communities. Written and performed by Marcella Pabros-Clark, "Healing Mars" is a dance theatre piece about self-healing, against the advice of the medical system. I like TeAda, and though these sound heady, they are likely great fun, informative and timely. Definitely timely.

Alright ya'll. I know with this economic downturn, you're starting to make like a chipmunk and stash nuts in those cheek pockets of yours, but do not abandon your dance classes. If you were planning to start one as your New Year's Resolution and you realized that things were gonna be tough way back in November so "why bother to plan to things that cost money," time to change your mind. There are lots of reasons: 1) the cost of these classes are just a bit more than a movie and waaay less than your cable or cell bill and better for your body; 2)spending money on a dance class adds capital to your local economy; 3)you don't actually enjoy having a large ass the way you thought you would; 4) it is cheaper to buy a class package than it is to replace your wardrobe; 5)your happiness index is directly correlated to your physical fitness; 6)I told you to go.

Alright, I'll admit to ending my attendance at Viver Brasil's Tuesday night class because I was tired of coming home to no parking; but then I got assigned to teach a T, Th schedule which means I cannot get back in time to take the class. I miss class. I have enjoyed having those extra dollars. The teachers miss their students and those dollars. The students have not enjoyed getting flabby or dancing around alone at home. So I would like to try an experiment that I will issue as a challenge here: let's do a day of classes at several area studios, a solid day, classes begin at 9 AM and go until 10 PM. Each class is $6, payable with $2 bills directly to the instructor. If you take more than 2 classes, you pay $4 directly to the studio, also in $2 bills.

Teachers, you then go out and spend your money only at local stores in the area where you live or at shows of local artists. It would be great if you could pool your money with another teacher to buy rehearsal/class time at the same studio. The studio would then spend their money to pay any staff or service provider in cash with same stipulation: local stores (no chain or big box stores), local art event/show. Then we could see where and how our money flows.

I am going to contact some of you directly to work on this with me. You likely know who you are, lol. If you want to be a part of this or do your own version in another city, please contact me so we can work together to build some momentum across the media and social networks.


LOVELY!
I have been inspired to do this by a pharmacist in a small town called Brewton, AL. He gave $16,000 in $2 bills to his employees as his own version of the stimulus package and asked them to donate 10% to a charity first, then shop downtown. The effect has been uplifting and noticeable, demonstrating what a little bit of cash can do for a community. Los Angeles is huge, but it is a loose (getting looser by the week) federation of villages, many comprised of micro-communities. A soul-ar system (cc). Though our dollars may look like a drop in a bucket, they will not feel like one to the teachers and small businesses that will receive them. Yes, this is a test of the emergence of a new type of fiscal broadcast. Stay tuned.

NEWSLETTER: sweeping motion

Alafia!!

Wow. What a day! SO much massive shift in the economic landscape of the state, I just can't even begin to recount it for you. Actually, that's not entirely true. I was so in shock today when I realized that I had already received my paycheck a few days in advance after a very sobering town hall meeting on campus about the impact of the California budget deficit on our campus that I blogged and blogged. Some of it is published as just questions, and the rest is out of sight, awaiting deployment as it were at americanwaysnetwork.com. Suffice it to say, the obvious response is happening, not the innovative one that we need, to cover the budget deficit. Community college fees are likely to go up, teachers got pink slips today, and the Pell Grant was not paid, so thousands of students in UC and Cal State will have a funding gap of $800-$900 for Spring Quarter. How could this have gone differently? What can we do as citizens to make these "cost saving" devices shift into community-defining initiatives? I think a good place to start is the repeal of Prop 13 and that bloody 2/3rds vote required to pass the budget. In effect, we are being held hostage by hostile Republicans who actually think that they can be "Strategic" and get party policy across at a time like this. Partisan politics need to be set aside, like, yesterday. Or better yet, "partisan politics is so 2008. We've moved on." can you imagine?! Innovation, not eruption, or deviation or consternation or justification. A)Saturday lectures held by profs at local schools where it is only $5 to get in for several consecutive Saturdays. Curriculum organized on internet. After so many hours you can sit for an exam, present a final piece, get units towards degree. Professor is paid from the door. So it's a donation from the university, but it is also gas and grocery money for prof (we may end up with a temp pay cut) and the fee hike at cc's does not hurt as much. B) Community Currency, C)urban micro gardening, D)rent-a-ride car pool facilitation in exchange for gas money. E)Childcare exchange, F)shows that charge food items, G)spontaneous performance take overs at City Halls and in state capitals once a week, H)an "is that really trash" instructional program, I)tax breaks for landlords who house state/city employees who can't afford their rent because of furlough/work stoppage/pay cut/layoff, J)ending private prison contracts and eradicating the three strikes law... My brain is roiling with ideas. I just need a group to talk them over. Be my think tank? I'll heart you forever. Discussions starting at Afrologica, with an artist's perspective.

just in time to get you ready for Carnaval here in Los Angeles. Kirk Brundage leads samba reggae instruction and Laila Abdulla from Viver Brasil will teach afro-reggae moves. Go just for those two! But there is more! $25/class, $45 for two.

DanceBANK is still going strong at the Metabolic Studio/Dance Under Spring, and Kimberly Mullen's Afro-Caribe class is in effect at Electric Lodge, but I know there have been some issues keeping the West African class at Lula's still going while the teachers traveled back home for a bit. There are subs lined up for Viver Brasil's classes while they head to their other home, Bahia. Rae Blum is back with her donation based class at Dance Arts Academy. I am not sure if Gregory Barnett's class at the Open Space is still on or not. I am itching to get back into studio to keep working out these ideas that are driving my grant writing, but no space just yet. There are parent-driven initiatives for advanced dance classes where kids are welcomed (contact Ilaan Eagland if interested through the Post-Bump Dance Studio). With it starting to heat up, you can bet there will be lots of dance and movement classes in parks shortly. Stay tuned for a great spring class session. If you just started following the newsletter and have a class or trip that you would like listed hit me up with the info. All class locations are on the dance map.


MAKE ART
You know those cool lampposts in front of LACMA? Well, it's an installation called Urban Light, and the museum is putting together a one year anniversary celebration that will include art work inspired by this "instant landmark" submitted by the citizens who adore it! Looks like Machine Project rubbed off on them nicely. Yay! There are lots of rules to follow for your entry to be considered, so take the time and read the entire page on how and when to get the application submitted.


LOVELY!
Everything is working out perfectly and I don't even have to know how. That is your new mantra. Say it everyday, all the time, any time you feel like, "omigawd!!" This next week feels like a pivotal moment. Make a plan for what you would like to manifest and then ask, now how is this of service? What would make it better? What is an easily dissolved barrier? I think we all need to do that soon. I kinda started making one in my head this morning (Friday) and wow, all my love of micro movement came to the conclusion that what's needed is a swarm on Sacramento. Our mode of governance in California is broken. It pits us against each other. We can't live the Obama-nation magic with that in tact. Likely a lot of states are realizing that they have a system that only works with two groups in mind: dominators/dominated. How 20th century is that? We have moved beyond that model, at least we aspire to, living in complex societies even in rural areas. With the economy rapidly shifting who has and who has not, it seems to me that we have been presented an opportunity to create citizen-driven governance based on mutual benefit instead of losers and winners. Collaborators. So artist-types, it is time to bring your voice and sweat and vision, because we got this. We know how effective being a visionary really is...and how practical.

NEWSLETTER: bring it or get off the floor

Whew!

I am so glad to have figured out the first part of the migration of the list to Gmail! The entire process put me in the mind of bureaucracy: you know, just when you think you've finally got the right form and talked to the right person, you have to start all over because you missed the first step that would've granted you access to the thing you figured out anyway? Yeah. And that's where we are as a nation right about now. The O-man's selections for cabinet members doth send the chilly chills down the spine, but maybe we should look at this another way: he ain't no dummy, and does not feel like wasting his time standing in the wrong line or talking to the wrong people during his first term, only to discover that he got absolutely nothing done once he gets into term two. Remember Clinton's Health Care Plan? Okay. So, the other side of the O's selection are the empty senate seats. If you know folks in those states, help them get an Obama supporter in the seat, cause the real deal is that the house of reps and the senate make the laws, not the prez. Are you following? If not, check out that Obama Hustle one more time. Those women really encapsulated the movement of this guy. But this is not to say that he's on the totally right track. He's just trying to figure out who's got the torch and who's got the fire extinguisher cause stuff is burning down to the ground! Speaking of burning, if you are or know ANYONE in a state college, university or especially community college, your access to an education was just severely curtailed. Here in California, the Cal State System has severely reduced enrollment and are not accepting transfers from Community Colleges. The UC is also considering similar moves and there are rumors that UC Berkeley and UCLA have already announced they will only consider the top 1% of applicants. I stress rumor. As I get info on this, I will let you know. As a dance educator, this directly impacts my life: most 4 yr dance majors come from the 2 yr CC experience. We could be looking at the suspension of our program if the numbers drop significantly. But what this means for all of us, are a whole lot of angry twentysomethings who were just trying to get ahead. And now, more than ever, it is imperative that you aim far higher than you think you should; there is more room at the top, and more help too. Go ahead and apply to the best, all they can say is yes or no. Write the president-elect every other day; someone is reading every line. Start that biz, write that novel, offer that service, preach, teach and BRING IT!

Tis the season for the modern dance reconstruction! This is another great opportunity for the dance historian in you. From their press release:
All independent choreographers and performers, RPPE members Anne Grimaldo, Jeff Grimaldo, Stefan Fabry, Tamsin Carlson, and Sarah Swenson, have participated in work by Rudy Perez dating back to 1987. Inspired by the poems of Dorothy Parker, the tribute will include an assemblage of choreography by Perez and the Ensemble, with live music by Steve Moshier and the Liquid Skin Ensemble.

Rudy Perez is a major creative force in the field of American concert dance. Originally from New York City, he trained with the giants of traditional modern dance Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham, Mary Anthony and others. It was during his time with the 1960's avant-garde movement, Judson Dance Theatre - whose members included Yvonne Rainer, Trisha Brown, Steve Paxton, and Lucinda Childs – that he emerged as a post-modern dance pioneer.
So, you wanna check this one out, fo sheezy.

GOOD Magazine/Foundation comes to LA for a week of green good fun. Do your holiday in a different way. The Good Space will be open everyday from 11 AM until 5, the 5th - 11th. Most of the special RSVP events are booked and you have to become a member on the site to even RSVP. I actually ended up spending some money just to get you this info (!), but at least it goes to one of the organizations I was going to suggest you use for gifts. The Fair features music and indie arts and crafts. The website is cute, but oddly designed so basic info is hard to find. So, unless otherwise indicated, all events are at the address given above.

Kwanzaa Fest 2008

Part of shopping dollars spent at Target return to the "community" for a day of arts, crafts, music and dance. This show is packed with young talent, and some often overlooked seasoned performers as well. If you have kids, or want to meet a fantastic artist, make sure to show up for the mask making event at Noon, then again at 2 PM with Elliot Pinkney. The Pinkneys are giants in Af-Am Children Lit. This will be a real treat. Also of note on the bill is Maia, who has some of the most beautiful and loving songs I have ever heard composed for Kwanzaa. She starts her set at 2:40. Lula Washington's Dance Academy students will burn a hole through the stage and DJ Namdi will spin sounds of the diaspora for your hips' delight. Bring extra money for the Marketplace. Now, I don't see anything mentioned about food for sale, and that could be a problem, but likely, there will be a vendor or two outside. This is a must go, for the sheer range of performances and art!

LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Near you! It is likely that your neighborhood elementary school is having a winter fair or art bazaar tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 6th. So go and check the fence for the poster and support your local schools! We host ours at Oakwood and Coeur D'Alene in Venice, 10 - 4!

MICRO- FAIR, FINANCE = MACRO LOVE
Great gift idea/ongoing lovefest/fair: KIVA.org!! In keeping with the "teach a man to fish..." idea, Kiva gives micro loans, mostly to women I might add, to start up their own businesses in the Global South (developing world, as opposed to the decaying world, where we now reside). Peace & Love!

Well peoples...I just can't imagine why, oh why the flame throwers have been brought out, turned on high and aimed at our pockets. Actually, I could run a pretty interesting theory for you, but instead, I'll implore you to continue insisting for that 700 billion dollars to be spent on US, not on poorly managed businesses. "Yeah, but they voted," you say. Yes the senate did, but congress is still trying to figure themselves out. But as our outgoing president has shown us laws and agreements can be unsigned...If nothing else, you now know that there IS money for your child's school. There is money for the arts. There is money to stop the foreclosures. There is even money to pay down the deficit. No more excuses from the "leaders!" One of the great things that is happening is that we KNOW now: acting collectively and with great focus, we can make a change. So don't loose heart! I was listening to Howard Zinn today on the radio talking about FDR and how FDR came to be FDR. It was inspiring, because he is holding out for Obama to really become the change, not because he already knows how (heeellooo, nuclear lobby?!) but because we will lead him to his greatness. Yeah, there are forces at work to destabilize our new-found understanding of democracy, but there are more of us than them. And by applying that sense that we are all great, just in need of a bit of a boost from our "constituents" we can live the change, right now. Just look at what is happening in LA dance: the Times fired its reviewers, the performers got mad then organized and are making it happen. There's a shortage of venues: galleries, coffee shops, parking lots, yoga studios and parks are now hosting major performance events. It takes all of us rising to the occasion and taking turns at the helm to create and enjoy greatness. Yes We Can!

Viver Brasil helped celebrate her, Marcus Quiland-Nazario brought buckets and buckets of walking ponds to honor her in a parade, the LA Tap project launched, I had my students do water actions at UCR, the Governor declared a drought, and then the LA River was declared not really a river, and my neighbor, editor of the La La Times, George Wolfe made the LA Times when he commuted to work in a kayak and suite and now we have a fantastic series of water-based performances washing into town this week!!! I know, that was a run on sentence, but it was fun. But before I dive in, Ms. Pat Payne has this to say:

The Thursday night music series begins tonight! The schedule is a tad ho-hum until mid-July, but there may be something of interest to you. The 4th of July has a Hawai'ian theme, which, to be honest, turned my stomach a bit as there is right now a very intense lobbying effort to free this island nation from US control. But, it looks like a good line up. So if you like hula and ukelele, check it out on the 3rd of July. The GLOW Festival will be here, more to come on that. Parking is a NIGHTMARE. Please take the bus, or better yet, if you're local, ride your bike. The city provides valet parking right there on the beach.


SUNSET STRIP MUSIC FESTIVAL
Thursday June 26th - Saturday June 28th
This famous section of the boulevard launches its own festival this year with a very ecclectic mix of bands. This is a venue-based festival, kinda like the music festival in Austin, but waaay smaller. If you're over 42 yrs old with a significant amount of burned out brain cells, most of this will be heaven for you. I recommend checking out Dialated Peeples (whaat?!) for all the Gen X Hip Hop heads on Friday, June 27th at the House of Blues. But get ready for Sunset Junction, the mother of all urban music street festivals in LA, in August.

AFRICAN DANCE FESTIVALS/CAMPS/WORKSHOPS

Fareta has closed early registration, but you can still get in on the action and even pay with Pay Pal. This camp is hosted by Youssef Koumbassa July 6 - 13 at Camp Hye Sierra, Dunlap CA and features an All-Star line up of dancers from Mali & Guinea, with a few reps from Senegal. Yousseff has such good energy, if you can, check this out.

Alamuta at the Lacy Studio Lofts (OMG, they look so beautiful) in LA, July 11 - Aug 3, is set to kick off coming soon to LA in July, tickets still available. The line up includes not just dances from West Africa, but throughout the African Diaspora. let's thank them for organizing this by turning up and paying in full in advance...

Travel north to the Congolese Dance and Drum Workshop hosted by the Kongo dance community of Oakland, CA. Not to be missed! Held in Pike, CA near Nevada City, this camp truly transports you to the essence of the musidance. Their children's camp is worth its weight in gold. July 25 - August 3rd, but you can purchase by the day!

Le Bagatae in Chicago has announced a summer dance festival. Won Na Won Malan, by the lake in beautiful South South Shore district. August 7 - 10; Pay before July 24th $195 buys all 12 classes, concert and camp t-shirt. THE LINE UP IS HOT!!!! I will upload the registration form in Afrologica as it came as a PDF file. Youssouf Koumbassa, Djenaba Sako, Biza Sompa--just to give you an idea. This will be fierce.
